Sasha Hayes inducted to Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society at SUNY Oswego

2014 May 30

SUNY Oswego student Sasha Hayes of Fulton recently was inducted to the Eta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Sigma Gamma, a national honor society for nontraditional students.

A senior majoring in English, she was among 21 recognized for special achievements as nontraditional students who accomplish academic excellence while facing the competing interests of home and work.

The top 20 percent of SUNY Oswego's undergraduate, nontraditional juniors and seniors who have a 3.2 GPA or higher were invited to join the society this year, according to Jill Pippin, dean of the college's Division of Extended Learning.

"Given the large number of undergraduate, nontraditional students at SUNY Oswego, being inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda is a distinct honor," Pippin said. "These students have to be more committed to taking a class because of other responsibilities; the fact that they've excelled while doing so is outstanding. They should be extremely proud."

This year's guest speaker at the induction ceremony was Rameen Mohammadi, SUNY Oswego's associate provost for academic affairs.

"Rameen was chosen for his compassion, understanding, and respect for the nontraditional student population's pursuit of their education while balancing work, family and life commitments," said Ben Parker, the college's counselor to Alpha Sigma Lambda at the college.

The Division of Extended Learning serves the growing population of nontraditional students with courses and degrees offered online and during evenings and weekends. In addition to the main campus in Oswego, the college offers courses online and through the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse.
