Amanda M. Shedd participates in SUNY Oswego Global Lab

2013 Jul 15

Amanda M. Shedd of Fairfield, a student at SUNY Oswego, was among nearly 60 college and university students taking part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego's Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world this summer.

Shedd, a senior in biology, is conducting research at the University of Kinshasha in Democratic Republic of Congo. She is the daughter of Cindy Shedd of Fairfield and David Shedd of Altmar. After earning her undergraduate degree, she plans to attend veterinary school.

The 56 students are scattered among research institutions in Brazil, Congo, Costa Rica, France, India and Taiwan. The home campus for most of the Global Lab students is SUNY Oswego, with others from the SUNY centers at Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, the SUNY College at Geneseo and private institutions.

Research projects for SUNY students this year include puma conservation in Brazil, bioprospecting in Costa Rica, investigating medicinal plants used to treat diabetes in Congo, studying medical decision support systems, variable stars, and more.

Funding to help support the students' research experience abroad comes from a variety of sources, including external grantors such as Banco Santander and the National Science Foundation, the student's home campus (including private donations) and the international partner campus.

The Global Laboratory is one of a variety of study-travel options that further SUNY Oswego's goal to cultivate an expansive understanding of the world and its peoples and cultures. Others include short-term opportunities during breaks, quarter courses, traditional full-semester study-abroad programs and more. The college also offers alternative winter and spring breaks, assisting with humanitarian projects around the United States and the world.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2013, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2013 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges," as well as its 2013 list of "best value" colleges and universities nationally.

A 152-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
