Hannah Valentino Earns Medal at GENIUS Olympiad for Science and Art

2011 Aug 11

Hannah Valentino of Mexico, N.Y., recently received a bronze medal in SUNY Oswego's first GENIUS Olympiad, a global high school science and art competition focused on the environment.

Valentino presented a science project titled "Detection of Saline Tracer Through an Ice-Covered Pond Using 4D Electrical" during an exhibition in the college's Hewitt Union ballroom at the GENIUS -- Global Environmental Issues and Us -- Olympiad.

From June 26 to 30, SUNY Oswego hosted 223 young scientists and artists from 34 countries and 32 states -- all finalists in a competition that attracted more than 600 entrants -- along with 103 mentors and family members.

Entries in the scholarly competition spanned environmental quality, ecology and biodiversity, resources and energy, human ecology, and a special category, removing oil from water.

With the sponsorship of Terra Science and Education Foundation, Syracuse Center of Excellence, SRC, Airgas, Barton & Loguidice and TECHNOtime, participants took home such prizes as Acer notebooks, Kindle e-book readers and iPods, as well as certificates and medals; made a day trip to Niagara Falls; attended a high school all-star basketball tournament in SUNY Oswego's Laker Hall and concluded with a trip to Washington, D.C.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News named it among the "Top Public Regional Universities in the North" for 2011, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges."

A 150-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls over 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
