Kathryn Austin volunteers during Alternative Spring Break

2018 Apr 13

Kathryn H. Austin of Rodman, a senior majoring in psychology at SUNY Oswego, took part in the college's 2018 Alternative Spring Break service program. Austin volunteered with Outreach 320 in Domincan Republic teaching English to youths during school and providing education enrichment activities for after school.

SUNY Oswego's Office of Community Services offers Oswego students a variety of opportunities to volunteer and travel during Alternative Breaks in winter and spring. Ranging from international to domestic to local trips, these breaks allow students to explore while volunteering.

Dozens of students volunteered in March at Habitat for Humanity in Alabama; Project Outreach in Dominican Republic; Operation Northern Comfort, Texas; American Hiking Society, Virginia; and ARISE, Meals on Wheels, Seneca Hill and other Oswego County organizations.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2018, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2018 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges" and in its national list of "Green Colleges."

A 157-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
