Katrina M. DeBaun participates in SUNY Oswego Global Lab

Katrina M. DeBaun of Oswego, a student at SUNY Oswego, was among nearly 60 college and university students taking part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego's Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world this summer.

DeBaun, a sophomore in zoology, is conducting research at the Universidade do Planalto of Catarinense in Brazil.

The 56 students are scattered among research institutions in Brazil, Congo, Costa Rica, France, India and Taiwan. The home campus for most of the Global Lab students is SUNY Oswego, with others from the SUNY centers at Albany, Binghamton and Buffalo, the SUNY College at Geneseo and private institutions.

Research projects for SUNY students this year include puma conservation in Brazil, bioprospecting in Costa Rica, investigating medicinal plants used to treat diabetes in Congo, studying medical decision support systems, variable stars, and more.

Funding to help support the students' research experience abroad comes from a variety of sources, including external grantors such as Banco Santander and the National Science Foundation, the student's home campus (including private donations) and the international partner campus.

The Global Laboratory is one of a variety of study-travel options that further SUNY Oswego's goal to cultivate an expansive understanding of the world and its peoples and cultures.
