Nicole Scott participates in SUNY Oswego Global Lab

2012 Jul 13

Nicole Scott of Fairport, a student at SUNY Oswego, is among nearly 50 college and university students taking part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego's Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world in July.

Scott, a senior studying adolescence education-physics, is conducting research at National Central University in Taiwan. She is the daughter of Margaret and Robert Scott of Fairport.

After earning her undergraduate degree, Scott hopes to earn a master's degree in education and teach high school physics.

The four dozen students are scattered among research institutions in Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Taiwan, Sweden and Switzerland. The home campus for 31 of the Global Lab students this summer is SUNY Oswego, with others from the SUNY centers at Albany, Binghamton and Stony Brook plus Onondaga Community College and the University of Rochester.

Research projects for SUNY students this year include exploring organic fuel cells, puma conservation in Brazil, coding for the Gaia space mission, biostatistical analysis of the spread of dengue in Paraiba, the extra-galactic distance scale and more.

Funding to help support the students' research experience abroad comes from a variety of sources, including external grantors such as Banco Santander and the National Science Foundation, the student's home campus (including private donations) and the international partner campus.
