Sanjeev Kumar participates in SUNY Oswego Global Lab

Sanjeev Kumar of Syracuse, a student at SUNY Oswego, is among nearly 50 college and university students taking part in hands-on learning in SUNY Oswego's Global Laboratory network at science labs around the world in July.

Kumar, a sophomore studying applied mathematics, is conducting research at National Central University in Taiwan. He is the son of Mohinder Kaur and Gurmail Loi of Syracuse.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Kumar hopes to attend graduate school for mathematics or computer science..

The four dozen students are scattered among research institutions in Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Taiwan, Sweden and Switzerland. The home campus for 31 of the Global Lab students this summer is SUNY Oswego, with others from the SUNY centers at Albany, Binghamton and Stony Brook plus Onondaga Community College and the University of Rochester.

Research projects for SUNY students this year include exploring organic fuel cells, puma conservation in Brazil, coding for the Gaia space mission, biostatistical analysis of the spread of dengue in Paraiba, the extra-galactic distance scale and more.

Funding to help support the students' research experience abroad comes from a variety of sources, including external grantors such as Banco Santander and the National Science Foundation, the student's home campus (including private donations) and the international partner campus.
